Mumbai experienced heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds, disrupting suburban rail services and causing traffic slowdowns due to low visibility in many areas on Monday. With the early onset of the southwest monsoon, the India Meteorological Department has issued rain alerts for several parts of the country. Mumbai, Kerala, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu have all received rainfall over the past few days.
Mumbai rains latest:
• Mumbai recorded its highest rainfall in 107 years on just the first day of the monsoon.
• The monsoon arrived with intense downpour on Monday, causing waterlogging across several areas and disrupting suburban train services on Central Railway’s Harbour line.
• “The southwest monsoon made its onset over Mumbai today. This is the earliest onset in Mumbai in the last 75 years,” said IMD scientist Sushma Nair. She added that the monsoon had earlier arrived on May 29 in 1956, 1962, and 1971.
• A man died after being struck by lightning in Raigad district, an official confirmed.
• Services on Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) between Acharya Atre Chowk and Worli were suspended on Monday following flooding at an underground station.
• According to the BMC, the highest rainfall between 9 am and 10 am was recorded at Nariman Point Fire Station (104 mm), followed by A Ward Office (86 mm), Colaba pumping station (83 mm), and Municipal Head Office (80 mm).
Rain in other parts of India
IMD classified Delhi's Sunday rainfall alone as "heavy", making it the city's second-highest 24-hour May rainfall ever recorded. Temperatures also took a dip overnight, with mercury dropping 10 degrees at Safdarjung within 75 minutes.
Mumbai news: Orange alert in city, IMD predicts heavy rainfall
The southwest monsoon made its onset over Mumbai on Monday, a day after its earliest arrival over Maharashtra in 35 years. The weather department on Monday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, which it later upgraded to orange and then pushed to red alert, predicting extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds.
Mumbai is forecast to have a generally cloudy sky with heavy rain on Monday. The maximum temperature is likely to settle at around 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to be 24 degrees Celsius.

Kerala weather
IMD issued a red alert for five districts in Kerala on Monday -- Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Malappuram.
Meanwhile, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram are all under orange alert.
The minimum temperature is likely to settle at 24 degrees Celsius, while the maximum is expected to be around 31 degrees Celsius.

• Delhi recorded its wettest May since record-keeping began in 1901, the IMD said. The month's cumulative rainfall touched 186.4 mm, overtaking the previous all-time record of 165 mm, which was set in May 2008.
•In view of the rain alert in Kerala, a holiday has been declared for all educational institutions on Monday in Thrissur, Wayanad, Kasaragod, Ernakulam, and Idukki.
• Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are also likely to receive very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on May 26, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, IMD's weather bulletin read.
• The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed special teams to Baramati and Indapur tehsils in Maharashtra's Pune after torrential rain battered the areas on Sunday. Officials said Baramati tehsil received 83.6 millimetres of rain during the day, while the figure was 35.7 mm for Indapur.
