  Weather today: Traces of destruction remain visible in Ledum village of Arunachal Pradesh's East Siang district nearly two weeks after severe floods triggered by the simultaneous swelling of the Sileng and Kileng rivers, while affected residents continue to seek compensation, rehabilitation, and restoration of their livelihoods.

  The floods on June 28 submerged villages, damaged houses, buried agricultural land under sand and debris, swept away livestock and caused extensive losses to the fisheries sector as ponds were filled with silt and debris.

  The Gujarat government has launched a large-scale relief and restoration drive in Surat following widespread flooding after heavy rains, state officials said on Friday.

  In the 24-hour period ending Wednesday morning, Surat was battered by 358 mm of rainfall, which created a flood-like situation around creek areas of the city.

  "In response to the severe rainfall and flooding that affected Surat and surrounding areas, the Gujarat government, under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has launched a large-scale relief and restoration drive on a war footing to restore normalcy in record time," an official release stated.

  Keeping in view the critical situation after the floodwaters receded, Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi chaired an emergency high-level review meeting late on Thursday night at the Surat Collector's Office, the release said.

  The meeting was attended by all district coordination officers, senior officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation, and the district administration to review relief and rehabilitation work in detail, it added.

  Following relentless rains in parts of Himachal Pradesh, all government and private educational institutions and Anganwadis remained shut in Sirmaur and Solan districts on Friday, officials said.

  The MeT department in Shimla has forecast heavy rainfall in many parts of the state, cautioning against possible landslides, flash floods, uprooting of trees and road blockades.

  According to separate orders issued by the deputy commissioners of Sirmaur and Solan, Priyanka Verma and Manmohan Sharma, respectively, continuous rainfall is leading to obstruction of rural roads, increased risk of landslides and general disruption of normal life, particularly in the rural and hilly areas.

  Such inclement weather conditions are likely to endanger the life and safety of students commuting to and from schools across the district, the orders said.

  An order to shut educational institutions in the Paonta subdivision of Sirmaur district was issued late on Thursday. On Friday morning, the SDMs of Nahan, Sangrah, Pacchad and Rajgarh subdivisions in the district issued similar orders to keep schools and colleges shut.

  All teaching and non-teaching staff, however, were ordered to remain present at their respective institutes, officials said.
