Anisuzzma, 36, was posted in Varanasi. The condition of three others — Harishanker Dubey, Chandrabhan Yadav and Sanjay Rai — is critical.

Anisuzzma’s death was the third in the country since the 10-km run was introduced following the recommendation of the Bureau of Police Research and Development, New Delhi.

Aspirants are required to run the distance in one hour as part of the recruitment exam, constables seeking promotion, in 75 minutes. The first death took place in Rajasthan’s Bikaner on July 5. Desraj, 23, who wanted to join the forces collapsed after the run. A constable died in Meerut on July 20, the day the exercise to promote policemen began in Uttar Pradesh. On July 21, 22 constables had fainted in Azamgarh. Altogether, the number of policemen taken ill in UP has touched 150.

On Wednesday, nearly 99 police constables from Varanasi and Azamgarh had gathered at the Police Lines in Azamgarh for the physical test. Around 7 am, an hour after the 10-kilometre run began, constables started running out of breath and falling. They were rushed to the Azamgarh district hospital where Anisuzzma died. The three constables, whose condition worsened, were referred to a Varanasi hospital.

Despite criticisms being levelled against the system, Brij Lal, special director general, law and order, said, “There won’t be any change in the test pattern”.
