Consumption of spurious liquor during Holi cost 10 labourers and a woman tea vendor their lives in two villages of Bulandshahar district. Meerut IGP Javed Akhtar and Divisional Commissioner Shravan K Sharma visited affected villages on Wednesday.

“The police station in-charge and beat constable have been suspended,” said Sharma, adding that a recommendation to suspend the concerned excise officer has been made.

Sharma however confirmed the death of only seven persons. A case has been registered against Lajawab (uses single name) of Meerpur village and his aide Amarjeet, who allegedly adulterated a country liquor to make more money during Holi.

A salesman of the shop from where Lajawab purchased the liquor has also been taken into custody.

“We are trying to know the source of he hooch,” Sharma said.
