The Bombay High Court on Wednesday rejected the plea of Tanvir Ansari, one of the suspects in the July 11 Mumbai train blasts case, to transfer him to judicial custody from police custody.
However, Division Bench of Justices JN Patel and Roshan Dalvi directed the police to produce some "material evidence" to show that they have a prima facie case against Ansari in fifteen days.
Tanveer's contention was that the magistrate's court was wrong in sending him to police custody four times for his role in the serial blasts that killed at least 200 persons and injured more than 500.
ATS has registered four different cases against Ansari, one each for four of the seven blasts that took place. Though all the blasts were part of a single conspiracy, the ATS secured his police custody four times.
However, public prosecutor Satish Borulkar convinced the court that for each blast the investigation officer was different, so seeking police custody afresh for each of the blast was not wrong.
According to ATS, Ansari is a former SIMI member, and has received training in a terrorist camp in Pakistan.
