The explosion, which penetrated the thick security blanket covering this city for the prime minister's visit, occurred when terrorists threw a hand grenade at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bunker at Qamarwari in uptown Srinagar in the afternoon.

"Three CRPF soldiers and eight civilians were injured in the explosion. The injured were referred to SMHS hospital and the condition of one is serious," said a senior police officer.

He said security forces searched the area after the explosion but no one was arrested.

The explosion came three hours after the arrival of the prime minister, who is here to preside over the two-day Kashmir roundtable conference.

He is accompanied by Home Minister Shivraj Patil, National Security Adviser MK Narayanan, prime minister's principal secretary TKA Nair, Home Secretary VK Duggal, the Government's interlocutor on Kashmir NN Vohra and several senior central officials.
