12 convicted in Kandhamal riots case

Two courts in Orissa have convicted 12 people for their involvement in anti-Christian riots in Kandhamal district last year, reports HT Correspondent.

Two courts in Orissa have convicted 12 people for their involvement in anti-Christian riots in Kandhamal district last year.

The judgments, which came on Wednesday and Thursday, acquitted 50 people for lack of evidence. “All the cases were related to arson,” public prosecutor P.K. Patra told HT.

Fast Track Court II Judge Chittaranjan Das on Wednesday and Thursday convicted nine persons. The punishments were jail terms ranging from two to three years and fines of Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000.

Fast Track Court I Judge Sobhan Das on Thursday convicted three persons, handing out jail terms ranging from four to five years and a fine of Rs 2,000 each.
