36 others taken ill
ABOUT ONE dozen persons died and over 36 others were taken ill after they consumed spurious ‘methyl alcohol” near Hajipur Barsendi village in Faizabad district today.
According to sources, the chemical was being carried in a tanker, which overturned yesterday on the border of Faizabad- Barabanki border on the national highway, about 40 km from here. There was a big scramble among the locals from adjoining villages, including Hajipur Barsendi, Barai Kala and Begumganj, to collect the chemical. They consumed it thinking it to be liquor.
The police and civil authorities of both Faizabad and Barabanki districts swung into action after getting information about the death of about five persons.
About two-dozen victims were brought to Faizabad district hospital today, and a dozen were sent to Barabanki for treatment, according to sources. Five persons died in the hospital.
The condition of about one dozen victims, including three women, was stated to be serious.
It is learnt that many victims have not been able to reach district hospital here from adjoining villages. Therefore, a correct figure of affected persons could not be ascertained immediately.

{{/usCountry}}Civil and police officials have rushed to the spot. UP Social Welfare Minister Awadhesh Prasad and local BSP MP Mitrasen Yadav visited the District Hospital to enquire about the condition of the victims.
