The death toll from landslides and flash floods triggered by torrential rains has risen to 13 in the eastern and southern Philippines, where at least 30,000 people have been displaced, officials said on Monday.
At least seven road construction workers died after falling into a 46-metre deep ravine when a landslide hit on Sunday in the mountain town of Sogod on Leyte island, about 630 kilometres southeast of Manila, said Anthony Golez, deputy administrator for the Office of Civil Defence.
Six other people died of drowning and high blood pressure in the southern provinces of Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Norte, on Mindanao island, also on Sunday, the civil defense office reported. More than 30,000 people have been evacuated since the weekend due to flooding, authorities said.
