Nearly a year after their promise to deploy women constables at all the five Metro stations in the city, the Gurgaon police have finally deployed 13 women constables at these stations.

With the deployment of these constables, the total strength of Metro police has gone up to 22, which is still short of 36 policemen. The Haryana Police had last year promised a dedicated police force with 58 officers. The city police had also promised that three women constables would be posted 24X7 at — Guru Dronacharya, Sikanderpur, MG Road, Iffco Chowk and Huda City Centre Metro stations.

Earlier, the city had just nine policemen for Metro security deployed at the Iffco Chowk Metro station, responsible for all five stations in Gurgaon.

“We have finally got some relief with these deployments. Now, we will be able to provide better security to women commuters. Last year, the then police commissioner, SS Deswal, had announced that 58 police personnel would be deployed. He had also promised a police booth each at all the Metro stations,” said a senior police officer.

The failed promise, coupled with the outrage over the recent gang rape incident, was swelling public anger. The city police recently deployed an all-women PCR van on MG Road for ensuring women’s security in the city after the shocking gangrape of a pub worker. Earlier, the police had claimed that the dedicated team, in addition to Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel provided by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), would make commuters, especially women, feel secure. But the on-ground situation presents a stark contrast.
