The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) plans to submit a proposal to the Malaysian government for setting up 14 new Tamil schools.
MIC President Samy Vellu said the total cost of building the schools would be 12 million Malaysian ringgits (RM), according to Malaysia's Star newspaper.
MIC is the premier political party representing the ethnic Indian community in Malaysia. Indians, a majority of them Tamils, comprise eight percent of the country's total population of 24 million.
According to the Star report, MIC plans to build the schools in the states of Johor, Kedah and Perak.
Vellu said the Malaysian government had allocated RM 100 million for the construction of schools nationwide and the funds to build the Tamil schools would be sourced from that allocation.
Though the construction of vernacular schools was not included in the Ninth Malaysia Plan, an economic blueprint for the period 2006-2010, Vellu said the government would continue funding Tamil and Chinese schools.
