Among the dead were seven women and two children - a boy and a girl, police said.

"There were 21 people in the vehicle which dashed against a tree around 4 am on Thursday. They were on way to a marriage in Bellary from Gadag, 160 km away," a Bellary police spokesperson said by phone.

He said 15 died instantaneously and one in a hospital. Five others were being treated in a hospital in Bellary, about 300 km from Bangalore.
