At least 18 dead bombs have been fished out by Thane police as well as the Bomb Detection Disposal Squad (BDDS) from a pond in Wada taluka of the neighbouring Thane district.
BDDS has so far confirmed that all 18 bombs had explosive content in it, but were virtually dead. Investigating agencies are of the opinion that the dead explosives may have come as part of a larger scrap consignment from war torn West Asia or Iraq to be recycled in some of the factories located nearby, police sources said.
The explosives and scrap metals were found thrown into the pond perhaps due to the increased security and Tuesday morning's encounter between the Anti Terrorist Squad of the city police and two suspected terrorists of Pakistani origin at Antop Hill, sources informed.
Earlier, in the morning, the villagers informed the local police that the suspicious looking objects were lying in the pond which triggered an intensified combing operation by the investigating agencies.
However, no arrests have been made. Meanwhile, law enforcing agencies are conducting a series of investigations and combing operations in the area for any further seizures, sources added.
