The victim, identified as Sameera, was last seen on Monday morning around 10:30 am by local residents and family members. “The family started a search on their own without informing the police. No missing report was lodged with the police,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity.

The police said, it recovered the body of the girl from a kitchen garden in Khaipora in Tangmarg, Baramulla, 45 km north of Srinagar, after some locals spotted the body on Tuesday morning.

“The body was recovered about 500 metres from her house,” said the police.

According to the victim’s parents, their daughter left home in the morning and was last seen near a nearby bus stand around 10:30 am in Khaipora area.

The police admit it is a case of murder. “A preliminary investigation has showed that the girl received injuries by a sharp-edged article on her head and neck,” said the senior police officer.

A team of doctors, including a lady doctor, has conducted the post-mortem of the body and a report will be filed soon. After the legal formalities, the body was handed over the parents.

The police have registered a case under FIR No. 80/2010 U/S 302 RPC at the Police Station Tangmarg. “On the face of it, it’s a murder case and an investigation is on to identify the culprits,” said the police officer.
