Two helicopter crashes that resulted due to "violation of flying safety rules" cost the state exchequer Rs 8.79 crore in insurance during the three-year tenure of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, officials said on Saturday.
"We have lost Rs 8.79 crore in insurance due to violation of flying safety rules that resulted in two state-owned helicopter accidents in the first three years of the coalition government," they said.
They said Rs 8.45 crore were claimed from Bajaj Allianz for on helicopter (VT-FJK), which crashed in August 2003 but no compensation had been received from the company so far.
Another Rs 7 crore were claimed from Oriental Insurance Company Limited, Jammu, for a helicopter (VT-EUY) that crashed in July 2001, they said adding that the company released Rs 6.66 crore by dis not pay the remaining Rs 34 lakh.
Besides, Rs 6.22 crore loss was incurred on maintenance and fuel consumption of state-run helicopters/aircraft during the three-year tenure of Sayeed, they said.
Of this, Rs 132.37 lakh was spent on fuel from 2003 to January 31, 2006 and Rs 489.77 lakh on maintenance, they said.
