Two Indian workers were killed and five others injured due to a suspected gas leak at a shipyard in Singapore, in the second fatal accident involving Indians in the city-state within a month.
The workers were servicing a ship docked on Tuas Crescent Road when carbon dioxide gas leaked from below the deck of the vessel on Tuesday, media reports in Kuala Lumpur said.
The workers were rushed to a hospital where two of them, in their 20s, died. Five others, aged between 22 and 32, were undergoing treatment at the National University Hospital.
The police and the Ministry of Manpower are investigating the accident.
Earlier this month, Indian national Karuppan Arjunan, 42, died from burns suffered in a blast on supply boat Rainbow Star at Kreuz Shipyard in Tuas. Fourteen other shipyard workers were also injured.
Last year, nine workers died in accidents due to fires, explosions and exposure to harmful substances, prompting the Workplace Safety and Health Council and the Ministry of Manpower to step up efforts to curb such mishaps.
Under the Workplace Health and Safety Act, companies can be fined up to $5,00,000 for flouting safety rules. Guilty owners face a maximum $2,00,000 fine or a jail term of up to two years, or both.
