In a bid to decongest the usually busy Mahavir Chowk and Maharana Pratap Chowk, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is planning to construct two flyovers at the jam-prone spots at a cost of R300 crore.
The civic body is also planning to build two underpasses at Iffco Chowk and Signature Tower Chowk on the Gurgaon Expressway.
“In addition to the flyovers, we have also decided to build underpasses at Iffco Chowk and Signature Tower Chowk. We will soon start work,” the MCG spokesperson said.
Mahavir Chowk, located near the inter-state bus terminal in Gurgaon, connects Old Gurgaon with Delhi.
Maharana Pratap Chowk — also called MDI Chowk — connects MG Road with Gurgaon Expressway via Sukhrali Road. It also connects the expressway via Signature Tower Chowk.
“In the next six months, tender related work will be completed. After that, construction will begin. The flyovers would be completed within two years. The MCG will acquire land from various agencies in the area for the construction of flyovers,” the spokesperson added.
The Mahavir Chowk flyover will cost around R200 crore while R100 crore will be spent on the construction of Maharana Pratap Chowk.

{{/usCountry}}“The construction of the flyover will help ease congestion in these areas,” the official said.
The Mahavir Chowk flyover — a double-road flyover — will be one km long and cover parts of Mehrauli Road, Old Delhi Road, Civil Line and Sohna Road.
The length of Maharana Pratap Chowk flyover is yet to be decided.
“After this flyover is constructed, commuters can directly go to Iffco Chowk from Maharana Pratap Chowk,” the spokesperson added.
According to an MCG survey, around 8,000 vehicles ply on Mahavir Chowk during peak hours. Also, around one lakh vehicles ply on Mahavir Chowk-Old Delhi Road route every day.
Further, around 57,000 vehicles ply on Mahavir Chowk-Bus Stand and 37,000 vehicles ply on Agrasen Chowk-Railway Road route. Further, as many as 79,000 vehicles ply on Agrasen Chowk-Gurudwara Road every day.
Sadar Bazaar and Mahavir Chowk are one of the worst-affected spots in terms of traffic jams. Commuters are forced to spend hours waiting to get through these points.
“If one is coming from the Old Railway Road, it usually takes a minimum of half an hour to reach Rajiv Chowk,” said Rakesh Verma, a commuter.
