2000 poll meetings in Srinagar despite threat

Despite militant attacks, nearly 2000 public meetings were organized by different political parties and independents fighting the Parliamentary elections from three constituencies of Kashmir valley, a senior state government official said on Tuesday.

As many as 1930 public meetings were organized in different parts of the valley and 172 of which were attended by more than 1000 people, Chief Secretary S S Blouria told reporters at the end of the second round of polling here.

He said Srinagar parliamentary constituency which went to polls on Tuesday witnessed 426 public meetings with 65 of them attended by over 1000 people.

On the reported incident of PDP President Mehbooba Mufti tearing the veil of a woman at a polling booth set up at Burn Hall School in Sonawar area of Srinagar, Chief Electoral Officer of the state B L Nimesh said no such complaint has been received.

A complaint about a Sikh family not allowed to vote was received by the commission, he said, adding action was immediately taken by which the family was made able to cast their votes.

He said details about postal ballots are awaited. We have distributed 243 postal ballots in Delhi, 25 in Udhampur and 36 in Jammu.
