The seriously injured, including two women were admitted to GB Pant hospital, while the others were released after first aid, police said.

The tribal families hailing from far flung areas of the state had encroached upon government land and constructed makeshift houses since February 2, just after the state assembly elections were declared.

They ignored repeated requests of the adminsitration to vacate the land on the plea that they were landless people, official sources said.

Trouble started when the West Tripura district magistrate asked them over microphones to vacate the place and TSR swung into action. As the tribals resisted, the TSR lathi charged injuring 25 of them.

The situation was, however, under control.

Police said action was not taken earlier to evict the tribals in view of the poll on February 23.
