For the past few weeks, the campaign against drunken driving has been stepped up in the Millennium City, especially during the night.

Over the past seven months, more than 7,000 drivers have been fined for drunken driving.

On June 26, a record number of 417 challans were issued by the traffic police within six hours.

The drive has been spread across 24 locations in the city on busy roads that lead to or are close to pubs, restaurants and liquor vends. Police teams have been alert on MG Road, Golf Course Road and Gurgaon Expressway.

On June 8, three persons were imprisoned for two days at Bhondsi Jail imprisonment after a district court order for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The accused were also imposed a fine of Rs2,000. They were convicted by the court for the offence punishable under Section 185 of Motor Vehicle Act 1988.

"We have also decided to focus on enforcing lane discipline, especially on heavy vehicles, during the night to prevent accidents," said the official.
