At least 26 people were injured when eight bogies of Punjab Mail, a passenger train, derailed in Chuliyana village near Sampla town of Rohtak district in wee hours of Sunday.
The injured were admitted to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science in Rohtak.
A high level enquiry was launched to ascertain the exact reason behind the mishap on the orders of union railway minister Mukul Roy after getting the details from the railway officials after the accident.
The district administration swung into action after receiving the information of the derailment and reached at the site to start rescue operation, which lasted for three hours. Video
According to the information, Punjab Mail started its journey at 10 pm on Saturday from Ferozepur and reached Rohtak railway station at 3.30 am on Sunday.
When the train reached near Chuliyana village, 16 kms away from Rohtak station, suddenly eight coaches derailed on the track and among those, six overturned after uprooting the tracks around 3.45 am on Sunday.
The ill-fated derailed coaches included six bogies of the second-class sleeper (S-5 to S-10), one luggage compartment and the guard.
Passengers on board informed the police, who reached on the accident site after few minutes and began rescue operation. The injured were rushed to PGIMS hospital and most of them were discharged after treatment till the filing of story. Three of passengers suffered serious injuries including head, spinal and fractures.
After clearing the track as a joint rescue operation by local and railway police, the rest of train proceeded towards its destinations around 6.30am.
Inspector General of Police (Rohtak Range) Alok Mittal informed that incident took place around 3:40am and local police officials along with Railway Police reached the site to start the rescue operation immediately.
"We promptly reached the spot and helped railway officials in rescue operation," said Mittal, adding that railway officials took nearly two hours to clear the track.
Speaking with media persons, Divisional Railway Manager (Delhi Circle) Ashwani Kumar Lohani said that a high level enquiry has been marked out in this derailment mishap on the orders of union railway minister Mukul Roy to ascertain the cause of the accident. He said that railway authorities are very much concerned for the safety of the passengers when asked about the repeated rail mishaps of derailments in the country.
General Manager (Northern Railway) Raj Shekhar told to Hindustan Times that the railway authorities would bear the treatment expense that includes Rs 5000 for serious injuries and Rs 500 for minor injuries.
When asked about the cause of derailment, he told to HT that it appears that the railway track was fractured but exact reasons would be confirmed after an enquiry which would be conducted by commissioner railway safety in Northern region, RK Kardham.
It would take 15-20 hours to clear the railway tracks after lifting the bogies with the help of heavy cranes. Two accident medical relief trains were sent to the mishap site from New Delhi and Bathinda with heavy manpower to restore normal railway traffic on Rohtak-Delhi railway track.
