"The bodies of 29 passengers have been recovered" from the accident site, senior police official Santosh Kumar Singh told AFP.

Police said the bus was travelling between the desert state of Rajasthan to central Madhya Pradesh state when it plunged off the bridge in Morena, 350 kilometers from capital city Bhopal.

It was not immediately known how many people were aboard the bus.

Bus accidents are common in India because of a combination of bad roads, overcrowding and poor maintenance of vehicles.
