The incident took place on Saturday when the victims were working at the bridge being built by a private contractor under a four lane road work, Ratlam District Collector Mahendra Gyani told PTI on Sunday after returning from the spot.

All the deceased belonged to Madhya Pradesh's Katni district, Gyani said adding five injured were being treated in a hospital at Jaora while one was admitted in Ratlam Civil Hospital in critical condition.

The contractor has promised to pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the kins of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured, he said adding that the state government would also provide them assistance.

A three-member expert team led by A L Sancheti of Setu Nigam has been set up to probe into the matter, the Collector said.
