Meanwhile, nearly 90 fishermen remain missing since the weekend after being caught in storms in the Bay of Bengal, said officials in the coastal towns of Barisal and Cox's Bazar.

The families of the missing said they were hopeful they would return as fishermen were often forced to shelter in far-off places for weeks.

A woman and her child were swept away yesterday by gushing flood waters in the southeastern town Teknaf, the Daily Star newspaper reported.

The town, bordering Myanmar, yesterday received 221 millimetres of rain in 24 hours, Bangladesh's highest ever rainfall in a day during this time of the year, weather officials said.

Police in the southeastern port city of Chittagong said one person died in a landslide, also yesterday.

Thousands of people left stranded by floods since late last week were waiting for water levels to drop after the rains eased, officials said.

Officials and media reports said some 100,000 people were marooned across Bangladesh after heavy downpours caused rivers to burst their banks.
