A day after Special TADA Judge Pramod Kode sentenced three bomb planters to death, he handed the same verdict to three more in the 1993 serial blasts case.
On Thursday, the court sentenced Asgar Mukadam (48), Shahnawaz Qureshi (44) and Shoeibh Ghansar (44) to the maximum punishment "for actively participating in the blast conspiracy and planting bombs which lead to the death of many people". The court observed that the case falls in the 'rarest of rare' category.
The first to be sentenced was Mukadam, prime conspirator Tiger Memon's accountant. He and Qureshi had parked an RDX-laden car in Plaza theatre's parking lot in Dadar. Ten people died in the blast.
Qureshi, a slumlord in Bandra, got the death penalty on three counts of conspiracy, planting a bomb and murder.
Ghansar, who had parked an RDX-laden scooter at Zaveri Bazaar, was next. Seventeen people died in the blast. A salesman at Heera Panna Shopping Centre, Asgar had introduced him to the conspiracy much later. He said: "Allah paar bharosa hai abhi bhi.... appeal toh zaroor karunga (I still have faith in God... I will definitely appeal)."
