Railway engineers working on building a new rail corridor in the city have found a way to manage environmental concerns too.
The new bridge will be built without dropping a pebble in the Mithi river, and should be ready soon.
Once the rail corridor is ready, it will help the Western Railway increase services by 20 per cent and have a dedicated line between Mumbai Central and Santacruz.
“To hinder the flow of the Mithi would be detrimental in the monsoon and would invite bigger environmental troubles. Hence, it was a challenge to put up a bridge that would carry three new tracks,” a WR official said. “We are using novel engineering techniques to have least effect on the flow of the river water,” D.K. Saini, chief project manager of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation said.
“We will be building the bridge without dropping a pebble into the Mithi. This will ensure that we do not need to divert or stop the flow of the river even partially,” Kamal Gupta, director of J Kumar Infrastructure Ltd who has bagged the project told HT.
Besides passing this bridge over the Mithi, the project also includes passing of tracks under the Western Express Highway bridge near Bandra. The WR and the MRVC are building two new lines between Mahim and Santacruz stations as a part of the World Bank-funded Mumbai Urban Transport Project.
