Is India spamming the world? Yes, if one were to go by a new report on growing security threats in cyberspace released by global internet security solutions provider Symantec Corporation.
The report says 76 per cent of the total email originating in India is considered spam, compared to a world average of 56 per cent.
The report found that 68 per cent of the attacks on networks in the US originated in India, while 84 per cent of attacks on Indian networks originated in the US.
Although India accounts for just one per cent of the spam produced by the top 25 spam-producing countries, the

states: “As broadband penetration in India increases, the impact of threats will increase.” An online underground economy for fraud in India is also growing.
The report notes that there is no dearth of viruses, phishing (a type of email scam that steals your identity), and malicious software codes in India. There are also at least 40 command and control servers, which control bot-infected computers in India. A bot is a malicious software code, which allows a computer to be accessed remotely.
India ranks 14th on a global list of countries hosting phishing sites, where Mumbai leads with 30 per cent, followed by Delhi at 29 per cent.
