A married man, Mangesh Chandankhede (25), was arrested on Tuesday evening for raping an 11-year-old girl at Awandhi near Kamptee, a satellite township, some 20 kms from here. It was said that Mangesh entered the victim’s house when her parents were in their farm. The accused reportedly threatened the girl and raped her at knifepoint.

He also warned the girl of dire consequences if she spoke about the incident to anyone. However, the panic-stricken girl later narrated the entire incident to her parents after they returned in the evening.

The victims’ parents immediately approached the local Kalamna police station and lodged a complaint against Mangesh. The police have arrested the rapist and booked him with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

However, when the girl could not bear the trauma anymore, she informed about her ordeal to her mother, who approach the local police station. Police have arrested the accused father in this connection. The girl was sent for a medical examination.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra home minister RR Patil air-dashed here and reviewed the law and order situation of Nagpur city. He also held a meeting with the senior police officials in this regard.

On the other hand, the senior Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe flew down to Nagpur from Mumbai on Wednesday and met the commissioner of police (CP) to register her protests over the growing incidents of sexual assaults in Nagpur.

She expressed resentment for Nagpur police’s failure to arrest the rapist of school girl who was raped by an unidentified youth on the school campus on Tuesday morning. The fifth standard girl student reached the school at Shantinagar in east Nagpur, 35 minutes early on Tuesday morning.

She sat a school bench outside of her school room as her classroom was locked. A youth allegedly sporting shorts approached her and names of her parents. The youth then told her that she had grown up fast and forcibly took her near the bushes behind the school building.

Sensing trouble, the girl started shouting. The youth gagged her with a piece of cloth and raped her. After committing the crime, the youth ran away.

A panicky girl later narrated the story to the school staff who immediately informed her parents and admitted her to the government run Mayo general hospital.

Gorhe met the girl at the hospital and insisted that the culprit should be arrested immediately. “Investigations are in full swing and all efforts are being made to identify and bring the culprit to book,” the in-charge of Lakadganj police station, Rajesh Sonwane said.
