The protesters claimed that they did not celebrate Diwali in protest against the Haryana government's "dilly-dallying" attitude in releasing compensation for the past three years.

Rashtriya Jatigath Arakshan Virodhi Party general secretary Ravinder Jatheri, who has been supporting the farmers, told HT: "The public works department (PWD) department had acquired more than 60 acres of nearly 50 Sisana farmers in 2010. At that time, the department had claimed to compensate farmers at the earliest but, three years hence, they are waiting for money."

He said that recently they handed over a memorandum to Suresh Dangi, superintendent engineer (SE), PWD department, Sonepat, demanding release of the relief amount.

The SE said he was unaware of the matter but his juniors might be in the know of it.
