Thirty-one Maoist extremists and their supporters have been arrested in Jharkhand.

The arrests took place on Wednesday evening from the outskirts of Ranchi, Senior Superintendent of Police MV Rao said, following a tip-off that the rebels were gathering under the umbrella of a Maoist frontal organisation.

Some of those who were arrested were involved in killing policemen while others were supporters of the outlawed Maoist Communist Centre (MCC), Rao said. Two of them were described as "area commanders" of MCC.
