Nearly 3,00,000 business visitors are expected during the IITF — 50,000 more than last year, Executive Director of India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) Rajiv Yadav said during an interactive session with exporters in Shillong.

Last year, 33 countries participated in the IITF.

The IITF is among the 25 fairs to be organised domestically by the ITPO during the period between May this year and March 2007. Out of these, eight, including one in Sikkim, are being held out of Delhi, he said, adding that hosting the trade fairs away from the national capital was part of government's policy of 'gradual outreach' to the states.

Asked why only one was planned in the North-East out of 15, Yadav said a beginning would be made with Sikkim by holding an East Himalayan Expo in Gangtok from October 24 to 28.

Other fairs in Australia's Melbourne (from March 27 to April 1), Ukraine's Kiev and Tazakistan would also be held early next year, Yadav said.

The ITPO was planning to take part in the Bangkok Food Fair and more events were being planned next year, including one in China.
