The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG)’s plan to invoke a grid-based numbering system to identify intricate roads and streets in the Millennium City has been put on fast track. About 36 major intersections have already been identified and will be numbered in the first leg of the project implementation.
The MCG will soon publish advertisements in newspapers, inviting suggestions in this regard from people. The proposal, which got an in-principle nod by the MCG on November 21, was moved by the councillor of Ward 30, Nisha Singh in a meeting.
“We will very soon see the project in place,” said MCG commissioner Sudhir Rajpal.
According to Kishore Asthana, a resident who is keenly working over the project along with Singh, it will be an alpha-numeric system.
While roads going from east to west direction will be given a number, the ones running from north to south will have an alphabet assigned to them.
For example, all the roads running in one direction will have a number and the ones intersecting them will be identified by alphabets. “The crossroads can be easily identified too by reading the number and the corresponding alphabet together, i.e, 1A, 2B, 3C and likewise,” said Asthana.
Roads coming from other towns like Faridabad Road, Pataudi Road, Sohna Road will continue to be named so.

{{/usCountry}}According to experts, the system can be easily scaled up. If the city grows, new street names can easily be assigned.
While major part of the New Gurgaon area is laid out in a sort of visible grid and sectors with roads intersecting at right angles making it relatively easier to make a grid structure, the Old Gurgaon does not have well-defined sectors in many parts.
