The police arrested Ramesh Kadu (46), Aslam Khan (38), Arun Shetty (64) and Rahul Dixit (23) while they were trying to con another elderly man in the area.

Sub-Inspector Manohar Dhanawade said on Monday two of the accused stopped Kulkarni, who was on her way to the bank, and introduced themselves as policemen.

They told her that there was a riot-like situation near the bank and advised her to remove her gold chain and keep it in her bag. When Kulkarni did so, the other duo snatched her bag and fled.

The next day, the men stopped Jadhav (60) while she was on her way to the Reliance Fresh store.

“They told her also that riots had broken out and stole her jewellery using the same modus operandi,” said Dhanawade.

The four have reportedly confessed to their crimes.

“We are conducting inquiries to find out whether they have targetted more citizens,” added Dhanawade.
