Four people were killed in clashes between two communities and police firing in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, official sources have said.

The army has been called in to assist the police in quelling the violence even as a spontaneous shutdown was observed in the Gossaigaon sub-division on Thursday, the sources said.
“Additional security forces have been deployed in sensitive areas,” said the SDPO of Gossaigaon. On Wednesday, an irate mob from a minority community killed one Shankar Saha outside his shop at Houriyapet village. Another villager was also lynched. Aminur Sheikh, who was part of the mob, was killed in police firing. On Thursday, the body of one Mominur Ali was found.
Sources said there has been hostility between two Bengali-speaking communities over Kali temple land and a madarsa.
But the situation deteriorated after the death of a eight-year-old girl from the minority community.
