The victims were all under 10 years of age and belonged to Chandimaara village. They were rushed to hospitals in Jalalabad and Ferozepur.

Officials said that the accident took place at an unmanned railway crossing near Jalalabad town, 300 km from Jalalabad, because visibility was poor in the dense fog at that morning hour.

The train was going from Ferozepur to Fazilka town in Punjab.

Police did not rule out the possibility that the autorickshaw driver was trying to rush to reach school in time.
