The 48-year-old suspect was seized at his Ipswich bed-sit, on the fringes of the town's red-light area.

Named locally as "Dave", he was arrested on suspicion of murdering all five prostitutes whose bodies were found near Ipswich. He is said to have known all five women and was a client of several of them.

Police said the man arrested earlier, Tom Stephens, is "something of a fantasist".

Detective Chief superintendent Stewart Gull, who is leading the hunt for the serial killer said: "A 48-year-old man was arrested at his home address on Tuesday morning. He was arrested on suspicion of murdering all five women. A 37-year-old man remains in custody." A prostitute called Lou said "Dave" would pick up women and take them back to his home for sex. Police are searching the large Victorian house where he has a rear bed-sit at No 79 on London road. A dark blue Ford Mondeo was also taken away.

It also emerged that Stephens, also known as 'Bishop' held a party which was attended by all five victims weeks before the first woman went missing. They were among eight prostitutes he invited to a house-warming in October. Detectives are now trying to trace all the men who were there.
