Police said that the attack on the National Conference legislator and former tourism minister took place in Kulgam town on Saturday afternoon.

Itoo and four policemen were among the 32 injured.

One person was killed instantly while four others, including former National Conference legislator Gulam Nabi Dar, succumbed to their injuries, the police said.

All the others killed were also civilians.

An Army helicopter was rushed to Kulgam to bring Itoo to Srinagar. Doctors attending to the injured have referred many of the critically wounded people for specialised treatment in Srinagar.

Itoo has been attacked more than a dozen times in her home constituency of Kulgam in the last four years.
