The incident took place on Solapur-Gulbarga line in the afternoon when seven students were playing on railway tracks in Asra area of Solapur city. The other two were injured, one critically, and admitted at Solapur civil hospital.

“At Asra, there are two separate tracks, while the students stood on one to wait for a moving goods wagon train to pass,” said Narendra Patil, senior divisional commissioner manager.

“But there was another speeding passenger train coming from the other side on the track they were standing.”

The other injured Sagar Sabban is conscious and recovering, said the Solapur railway police.

The police could identify only two deceased who are Saiprasad Sabban and Sai Nalappa Pogul.

“Most of these students seem to be children of labourers working in the city’s Nilam Nagar area. We are now trying to look for their parents,” said Mukund Bokefode, public relation officer, Solapur railway circle.

Bokefode said the departmental enquiry of the incident has already started.

After the incident, a huge mob had gathered outside Solapur civil hospital. But the police managed to calm them, assuring enquiry of the matter.
