50 injured as gallery collapsed in Kozhikode

Atleast fifty people were injured, some of them seriously, when a makeshift gallery from where they were watching a local football tournament was partially damaged at Koduvally near here tonight, police said.

The incident occurred at around 9.00 pm when the popular 'Koyappa Sevens Tournament' was on, they said.

While a sizeable number of people were watching the match, a portion of the gallery suddenly leant over to a nearby river, they said, adding that the impact of the mishap would have been much more had the gallery crumbled altogether.

About 20 of the injured had been admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital here, while the others are being treated in private hospitals, police said.

The exact number of the injured could not be immediately ascertained as they were moved to different hospitals, police said.
