With anger seething in Kashmir valley over the Ramban killings, the authorities imposed curfew in Srinagar and other nine districts in the valley for second consecutive day on Saturday.
The decision to enforce strict curfew across the valley has come a day after large scale clashes were reported in north and south of Kashmir over the killings of four civilians and desecration of Quran in Ramban two days ago.
"The situation throughout Kashmir valley is peaceful at this hour. The night passed off peacefully," said Srinagar-based spokesman of the police.
He said 59 people, including 49 police and CRPF men were injured, in violent clashes of protesters on Friday. Unofficial reports put the number of injured protesters at more than two dozen, which include bullet and pellet injuries. Official figure of injured protesters is 10. Around six seriously injured protesters have been shifted to Srinagar hospitals.
A major face-off between protesters and security forces took place at south Kashmir's Qazigund area on Friday evening where demonstrators encircled a CRPF camp and tried to set it afire. The police fired bullets in the air and lobbed tear smoke shells to quell the assembly of hundreds of protesters.
Director General of Police Ashok Prasad Friday said, "Whether curfew would be imposed or not is a secondary question but one thing is clear that restrictions on the movement of people would be there at least for three days till Sunday, when (separatists) strike would be over."
Hardline Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for a three-day shutdown in the valley against the killings and the desecration.
