Six members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were arrested on Friday for sending a warning letter to the owner of Karachi Sweets, a sweet shop in Mulund.
“Following a complaint from the shop owner, we have arrested six people on charges of rioting. The arrest was made on Friday evening,” said Deputy Police Commissioner (Zone VI) Dilip Sawant.
“We will I have thought of replacing as my sons’ automobile shop bears the same name,” partner of the shop, Mohan Sachdev (60), told Hindustan Times.
“The police came over for an inquiry after learning about the matter. The police were extremely helpful, they assured me that I should not fear anyone,” said Sachdev.
Sachdev’s family had migrated from Sindh (in Pakistan) during Partition.
Another branch of Karachi Sweet Mart in Kopri Thane (E) was quick to veil its signboard fearing an attack. “After reading media reports, we decided to be on the safe side,” said shopkeeper Kamlesh Motwani.
The signboard of Karachi Sweet Mart in Thane also has the name, Jai Maharashtra Restaurant, under which it was registered.
“We added Karachi to Jai Maharashtra Restaurant as it was short and indicated where we came from,” said Motwani, whose family relocated to India from Sindh in Pakistan after partition.
The MNS has warned the shop owner to change the name at the earliest. “Today after the terrorist attacks by the Pakistani’s our citizens are offended by anything that is connected with that country,” said MNS leader Shishir Shinde.
