The suspended students had protested against the alleged rape of a girl in the hostel and the expulsion of the victim by college authorities. A class X student, living in a girls' hostel on the Aligarh Muslim University campus, had accused three hostel employees of rape on September 11.

Angry over the AMU authorities’ response to the case, the girls had protested in front of the Vice Chancellor's office on September 12 and ransacked it.

Girls from all faculties had staged a dharna in front of the Vice Chancellor's office on September 12 seeking the dismissal of the three accused and an FIR.
