Police said the suspected rebels ambushed Keishing’s convoy around 2.30 pm when he was returning from a convention on HIV/AIDS at Riha village.

The officer-in-charge of Litan police station Manikanta Singh said, “The six security persons killed in the ambush were from the 1st and 5th battalion of Manipur Rifles. The three vehicles in the MLA’s convoy were damaged but no weapons were lost.”

All the bodies were brought to the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital for post-mortem. The injured security persons were admitted to hospitals here. At the time of going to press, no militant group had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Keishing, who hails from Ukhrul district, has been demanding creation of a district (his Phungyar assembly constituency) out of the district. A civil society organisation has opposed carving out a new district from Ukhrul.
