At least seven persons were on friday injured during an anti-election protest in Ganderbal district, including one who was hit by a bullet when the personal security officer of a candidate allegedly opened fire as protesters charged at him.

Hilal Ahmad Dar was hit by a bullet in the leg when the PSO of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Party (Nationalist) candidate Farooq Ahmad allegedly opened fire as a group of protesters shouting anti-election slogans charged towards him when he was passing through the area, official sources said.

They said protests were held at several places in Ganderbal, which along with five other constituencies of the state assembly goes to the polls on November 23, on the call of the Separatist Coordination Committee against the election process.

Security forces used tear gas and baton charge to disperse the protesters, who pelted stones. Six persons were injured, the sources said.

Protests were also held at Maisuma in the heart of Srinagar, Anantnag and Sopore towns. However, the protesters dispersed peacefully, the sources said.
