The Tardeo police have registered a case of cheating and forgery against seven people for allegedly siphoning off Rs 37.5 lakh from five members of a family by promising them a flat each under the state’s affordable housing scheme.
The police claimed that the seven accused, including Anuradha Jadhav (45) and Sudhir Joshi, are absconding.
“Claiming to be a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) agent, Jadhav had promised the Botres flats at a price lower than the market rate,” said Inspector Popat Khunte.
In July 2007, the Tardeo family had allegedly paid Jadhav Rs 7.5 lakh each for a flat.
“I sold two chawl rooms, one at Mumbai Central and the other at Tardeo, and even pawned our jewellery to pay Jadhav. She promised us a flat each within a fortnight,” said Santosh Botre said. “But a month later, she started avoiding us.”
In 2008, Jadhav moved the Botres in a rented flat.
“Later, when I approached her she threatened me dire consequences. She also threw us out of the rented house,” said Santosh, an electrician.
His sister Jayshree added: “Jadhav had even promised to get my name selected in the lottery system. When we asked her for refunds, she gave us cheques. But all those cheques bounced.”
