Police opened fire in the air to scare away two groups of Congress and JD-S activists who resorted to brickbatting at Kariganur coming under Davanagere Lok Sabha constituency after lathicharge and lobbing of teargas shells proved ineffective to check them.

Congress workers staged dharna in front of a polling station to protest police officials refusing entry to their candidate Vadnal Rajanna and this triggered trouble between them and JD-S workers.

Police said seven persons were injured and six vehicles damaged when both groups indulged in stone pelting, but polling process was not disturbed.
