70% turnout, clash leaves Polling agent Dead in Guhla

Over 70 per cent of the 13.1 million electors in Haryana voted in the 12th assembly elections on Tuesday, amidst reports of violence in which one person was killed.

Over 70 per cent of the 13.1 million electors in Haryana voted in the 12th assembly elections on Tuesday, amidst reports of violence in which one person was killed.

A total of 1,222 candidates, including 67 women, contested in the 90 assembly seats in the state.

In the Guhla assembly constituency, polling agent Jyoti Ram died after being involved in a scuffle between supporters of Congress candidate Dillu Ram and an independent contestant Kulwant Baazigar.

Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Sajjan Singh, however, said that it was yet to be ascertained whether the person died due to poll-related violence.

“It can be confirmed only after an autopsy,” he said.

Two persons were injured when members of rival groups at Naya Baans village in the Garhi Sampla Kiloi constituency opened fire at each other.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda is contesting from Garhi Sampla Kiloi.

An Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) worker Qasim was injured when some people opened fire in the Ferozepur Jhirka assembly constituency.

The Congress nominee from the constituency, Maman Khan, was attacked with stones.

In the Meham assembly constituency, supporters of Congress nominee Anand Singh Dangi and those of an independent fought, leading to polling getting stopped for a while.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagbir Singh was injured when a scuffle broke out between supporters of the Congress nominee from Jind, Mange Ram Gupta, and the INLD candidate, Hari Chand Midha.
