"Eight people were found dead and two others are still missing," said an officer on duty at the Porong subdistrict police station, who gave his name as Tyo.

He said the latest victim was found early on Thursday.

The Sidoarjo district hospital said seven bodies had arrived there by 9:00 am local time (0200 GMT) and 12 other people were being treated for injuries.

The pipeline, about two metre (yards) underground, belongs to the state oil and gas company Pertamina, and channeled gas from the Kangean offshore gas field northeast of East Java to a chemical industry plant in Gresik, on the northeast coast, and to the local state gas and electricity companies.

The pipeline exploded at about 10:20 pm on Wednesday, Tyo said. It was near an earthen dyke built to dam the spread of hot mud from a volcano in Sidoarjo district that has been active since May, submerging hundreds of hectares of land under sludge and forcing over 12,000 people to flee their homes.
