The number of tourists saved from being drowned in Goa seas has seen an unprecedented rise, the state tourism department has said.
The figures tabled in the ongoing state Legislative Assembly, that began on Monday morning at Porvorim, mentions that
till June, this year, 88 people were rescued from the watery grave as against 44 people in 2008.
Incidently, the tourism department has initiated a beach safety management scheme, managed by Mumbai-based Drishti Response Services (DSRS), from last year onwards.
The company is managing two of the most crowded beach stretches -- Baga-Sinquerim and Velsao-Benaulim by recruiting around 150 lifeguards.
Tourism minister has said that only 11 people were rescued in 2007 from North Goa's Calangute beach itself. Goa receives around 24 lakh tourists every year, incism department has spent over Rs 4.14 on cleaning the beach.
