At least nine passengers were injured when 12 coaches of 0639 Ernakulum-Patna Express train derailed near Baruva, about 30 km from here, railway officials said on Thursday.
Train services were disrupted due to the mishap which occurred at a place between Baruva and Sompata in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh under Khurda railway division in the wee hours, Station Superintendent of Berhampur M R Patnaik said.
The injured were admitted to hospitals at Baruva, Sompata and Palasa where their condition was stated to be stable, he said, adding that teams of officials from Khurda, Bhubanweswar and Visakhapatnam rushed to the site to supervise rescue and restoration work.
As many as three trains -- 7480 Tirupati-Puri Express, 7016 Sikandarabad-Bhubaneswar Express and 2704 Sikandarabad- Howrah Falaknama Express -- were cancelled, while over a dozen other trains got delayed, he said.
